In a fishing-style called fly fishing, the flies that are used can be categorized as either imitative or attractive. Imitative flies resemble a natural food that the fish would normally consume. Attractive flies trigger instinctive strikes by employing a range of characteristics that do not necessarily mimic prey items. Flies can be fished floating on the surface, partially submerged, or below the surface. A dry fly is typically thought to represent an insect landing on, or emerging from, the water’s surface as might a dragonfly, grasshopper, or cricket. No matter the method, figuring out a method to catch the fish is half the battle.
