The Clermont had a sort of Regency Buck atmosphere and it was a feel which the proprietor John Aspinall had cultivated assiduously. Aspinall – or “Aspers” as he was universally known to his friends – had spent a lot of time and money on ensuring that the ambience of the Clermont was just perfect. He wanted to attract the richest and most aristocratic clientele in not just Britain but the world. These included the creator of James Bond, Ian Fleming, Lord Lucan and numerous government ministers. And once they were in his Club, quaffing champagne and hob-nobbing with Dukes, Earls and Captains of Industry, Aspinall planned, very simply, to cheat them blind.
