A recent survey, conducted by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) found that over 50% of reported fraud cases originated from spam e-mails in which the recipients were asked to reveal sensitive personal information. Identity theft accounts for approximately a quarter of all cases of fraud according to the FTC. There a re a variety of different types of identity fraud and the phenomenon represents a growing problem. Between 2007 to 2008 ID fraud complaints increased by 21% nationally. Computer users are urged to keep their sensitive personal data safe and not to divulge it in response to unsolicited e-mails, regardless of how authentic they may appear.
