Protein skimming is a process used to treat saltwater aquariums.  In this process, organic compounds are removed from the fish tank water before they turn into nitrogenous wastes.  This is done by using an equipment called a foam fractionator or protein skimmer.  How protein skimmers workThese aquarium supplies work by creating a big water interface through the injection of bubbles into the water chamber or column.  The process becomes more effective if it produces smaller bubbles.  Aside from protein, aquarium supplies used for protein skimming can also remove carbohydrates, fatty acids, fats, and metals such as copper from the aquarium water.Different types of aquarium supplies for protein skimmingThere are various types of aquarium supplies you can purchase when treating your saltwater tank.  One of these aquarium supplies is the air stone.  An air stone is basically an oblong wooden block that’s partly hollow, and is usually made of limewood.  Aspirators are also aquarium water supplies that can be used for protein skimming.  When using an aspirator, the water is pumped through the equipment, and is then exposed to bubbles.  As the bubbles are introduced into the tank water stream, the water goes through the skimmer body.Whatever type of protein skimmer equipment you use, make sure to use it properly and follow the maintenance instructions carefully to ensure a healthy environment for your aquatic pets.
