I am currently renting my home for three main reasons. First, I do not expect to hold my current job for a long time; I expect to switch jobs in months instead of years. As a result, it would be wasteful for me to buy a house that I may soon need to sell. Second, I do not have a lot of money saved up for a down payment, and many banks will not lend money to homebuyers unless they have at least 10 to 20 percent of the house’s purchase price. Third, with real estate values continuing to decline in my area, buying a house would be an investment on which I would probably lose money for some time to come. For these reasons, I am renting my house and will probably continue to do so for the next year or two.
