The instrument called the tabla is a pair of drums of contrasting size and sound, of Indian origin. They can be used in religious, classical, or popular music. The function of an electronic tabla is not meant to be any different from an acoustic tabla. The purpose in creating the electronic instrument is to mimic the acoustic version as closely as possible, while yet allowing the player the ability to adjust the pitch either to match his voice or for any other reason. Electronic tablas may also be programmed with set rhythmic structures for further ease of use in composing or playing a piece of music.
